Parent Letter from Superintendent - Re: School Lockout on May 30, 2019

May 30, 2019

Dear Parents,

At approximately 8:47 a.m. this morning, a secretary at Winslow Township High School, listened to a recorded message that was called into the High School last night. The voice on the message stated that they were coming to the school today to shoot-up the place. The secretary immediately alerted the High School Administration, who called the Winslow Township Police Department. The High School was placed on Lockdown and the Middle School was placed on Lockout until the police arrived. The police conducted a thorough investigation and traced the call to the home where the call was made.

During the investigation, it was revealed that the person who made the call was a Middle School student who was arrested at the Middle School during the Lockout. No weapons were found on school premises. A text message was sent to parents during the Lockdown alerting them of the situation, informing them that all staff and students were safe, and that additional information would be provided as soon as possible.

At no time were the staff and students in any danger, however, all precautionary measures were taken by the Winslow Township Police Department and all emergency procedures were followed by the Administration. At approximately 10:15 a.m., both schools were able to return to their normal operations.

It is unfortunate that these situations occur, but we must continue to let our students know that this is a serious matter, and anyone who participates in this type of activity will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

Sincerely,

H. Major Poteat, Ed.D.
Superintendent
