Through the use of the textbook “Avacemos,” students will explore attitudes, values, and skills that indicate a positive understanding of cultural differences and enhance cross-cultural communication. Through the various forms of communication: reading, listening, speaking, and writing; Spanish 1a and 1b are the foundation of the Spanish language learning experience. Students use their ongoing acquisition of Spanish vocabulary and grammar in a primarily hands-on and project-based learning environment. Technology is used in the classroom to enhance the students’ learning experience offering realia and real-world utilization of the Spanish language. At all times, students are encouraged to use the language in and out of the classroom. The study of another language and culture enables students to communicate in appropriate ways with people from diverse cultures. In learning Spanish, communication in English is reinforced and strengthened with the levels of language proficiency that are required to function educationally and to open doors to a variety of occupations and careers in the contemporary workplace. Students who successfully complete the level one Spanish program at the Middle School level can move on to take upper-level Spanish language courses at the High School. Ultimately by embarking on learning Spanish at the Middle School level, students can begin their journey to graduating with a “Dual Literacy” endorsement on their high school diploma, showcasing that a student has both the ability to read and write in the target language. |
